From time to time, I like to add a blog post that has nothing to do with increasing our business numbers. In fact, this post might have quite the opposite effect but is a special service announcement to all potential purchasers of web sites.
I read an article tonight: http://www.paulcarvill.com/2009/09/why-front-end-developers-are-so-important-to-the-future-of-businesses-on-the-web/
The article was written for designers and developers, but I think there is still an important point to be found by the common business person: do not under value your web site’s design!
It is very important to note that people ’surf’ to your web site to find out who you are, what you do, what you say and why it is important. The best way to do that is to trust the designer’s opinion about current web trends! Your designer, hopefully a designer from Goodfresh Designs, is a master at their job. The designer knows design; s/he lives and breathes design. You probably have an idea for your site and that is important as a client, but you should trust the professional creating a web site for you.
Read the article posted, but consider this as a last thought: would you tell the plumber how to fix your broken toilet or tell the mechanic how to fix your car?
To copy straight from the article:
“The modern web developer has huge amounts of value to offer a business. Indeed the type of professional you often find in this role encapsulates the very best the web has to offer:
* up-to-date knowledge of available and emerging technologies
* extensive experience of implementing de facto web standards and programming patterns
* database configuration and data manipulation
* implementation across multiple platforms and legacy software applications
* provisioning for mobile devices
* data aggregation
* graphics sourcing and creation
* search engine optimisation (SEO)
* a thorough understanding of the aesthetics and parameters of designing for the web
Further, the best web developers have wealth of knowledge and understanding around interaction design, user needs, hierarchies of data, navigation systems, user journeys, wire framing, design brief interpretation, focus group and usability testing and the art of a finely polished product.”

Many companies are really cutting back on costs in these difficult economic times. Nobody knows the effect of the recession better than small business owners. Anything from free coffee in the office to health care and design work on the web site is being cut in order to cut costs for the business as a whole.
As a small business owner, I know that it is very hard to make choices regarding cuts in spending. However, cut the free java from the budget before you cut your web site updates! Your web site is your way to advertise to the world and sell your company at a relatively cheap price.
Does your web site have a shopping cart? Is your site optimized for search engines? Do you have a blog to update customers and clients about your company? These are all questions that you should ask yourself when looking at your web site and its ability to help your company in more desperate budgetary times.
During a recession, the coffee might keep you working longer hours late into the night. But, your resourcefulness with new technology will help you gain clients and ride out the tougher times. And, if you are resourceful enough, actually allow your company to thrive while other companies are tightening their belts more and more.
